English Language Requirements for UK Universities: Which Test Do You Need?

Before you can begin your UK university application, you’ll need to prove your English proficiency. Most UK universities accept IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic, but required scores can vary by institution and course level.

At AHZ, our counsellors help you identify exactly which certification you need and build a preparation plan to get you there

It’s also important to note that, while universities accept a wide range of tests, the UK government often asks for a specific "Secure English Language Test" (SELT) to approve your visa.

Available English Language Certifications

IELTS Academic

The IELTS is the most trusted English test in the world and is co-owned by the British Council. It tests you in four core areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Accepted by virtually all UK universities. Most universities require 6.0–7.0 overall; Russell Group institutions typically require 6.5–7.0 with no individual band below 6.0. Results are often available within 13 days.

TOEFL iBT

This is a widely accepted certificate, particularly strong for US-style institutions. The typical UK university requirement: 80–100. Results are often available within 6–10 days of the test date.

PTE Academic

This is becoming increasingly accepted across UK universities. The typical requirement is currently 58–69 for the majority of universities that accept it. Results are usually available within 5 business days, which is the fastest turnaround of the three.

While IELTS is the gold standard, the latter two options are great alternatives if you need a quick turnaround to meet your University conditions.

Personalised Preparation Strategies

The best way to improve your score is to build a study plan that fits your personal learning style. A mix of professional coaching and daily habits will help you succeed:

  • Professional Tools: Use test-specific textbooks and mobile apps to learn the format of the exam.
  • Active Learning: Play word games like Scrabble to build your vocabulary in a fun way.
  • Daily Immersion: Listen to English podcasts or read British newspapers like the BBC to get used to different accents and professional writing.

Building these habits ensures you are ready for the test and for your future life at a UK University.

University Benchmarks & Visa Compliance

Every UK University sets its own "target" scores, and you should check the exact rules for your course before booking an exam. Meeting these standards is very important for the following reasons:

Course-Specific Scores: While most schools accept a standard score, competitive fields like Law and Medicine often require a higher level, such as an IELTS 7.5.

  • Preferred Tests: Most UK institutions strongly prefer IELTS, PTE Academic, or Cambridge C1 Advanced results.
  • Visa Mandatory: A valid English qualification is required to qualify for the UK Student Visa (Student Route).
  • Strategic Targeting: Checking your University’s specific benchmark ensures you don't waste time on a test that your chosen school might not accept.

Aiming for a higher score not only helps with your application but also ensures you are ready for the fast-paced academic life in the UK.
