Landing in the UK with your finances in order saves a great deal of stress in those first few days. Carry between £300 and £500 in cash to cover immediate expenses — transport, a meal, or a SIM card — before your bank account is set up. For day-to-day spending, digital banks such as Monzo, Starling or Revolut are straightforward to open and widely accepted.
Note that the Immigration Health Surcharge (approximately £776 per year) is paid during the visa application, though private travel insurance for the journey itself is still worth arranging separately. You should also bring translated health records and a signed doctor's letter covering any prescription medication you carry, and make sure to register with a local GP as soon as you arrive to access NHS services already covered by your Immigration Health Surcharge.
In terms of rent, on average, it costs around £600–£900 per month outside of London. The good news is that you are exempt from council tax as a full-time student — your university can provide a certificate if needed.
Fitting into a new country is much easier when you start early. We suggest joining your university’s Discord or WhatsApp groups months before you fly; building a social network now helps reduce culture shock later.
It is also vital to understand how life in the UK works. Something as routine as owning a TV or streaming live content requires a TV licence, a small details that catch many new arrivals off guard. A Student Oyster card or 16-25 Railcard will also cut your transport costs considerably from day one. By preparing digitally today, you arrive ready to navigate British life with confidence.
